The Goddess Tara 

The Goddess Tara is in all likelihood the most ancient goddess still worshipped extensively in these times. An incarnation of Tara exists in most cultures. The name Tara means Star, but she was also called She Who Brings Forth Life, The Great Compassionate Mother and The Embodiment of Wisdom. In Buddhist tradition, Tara is much more than just a goddess -- she is a bodhisattva, an enlightened one was has attained the highest wisdom, capability and compassion. One who can take human form and yet remains in oneness with the universe.
	Though there are many embodiments of Tara, the best known are the Green Tara, who brings fertility to the earth, overcomes obstacles, and saves us from physical and spiritual danger and the peaceful, compassionate White Tara who protects us and brings us peace, health, and longevity.   The goddess Tara appeared to the Buddha when he beheld the suffering of the world. Tara rose from a lotus blossom in the lake formed by the Buddha's tears. Recognizing her essential goodness, the Buddha granted her the right to be incarnated as a human man. But the goddess Tara chose to retain her form as a woman.
